Tuscaloosa , Alabama 40 reviews Out of this world fried chicken and watermelon rind pickles. Everything is great. Such a unique place for a romantic dinner. Way out in the woods and very very secluded. Candle lit and real fires in the winter. Thank you for your feedback! Was this review helpful to you? This is the "new" Cotton Patch, as the original burned down years and years ago. The original was better, but they still fire up an mean grill.

Manager Virginia Holley said the Eutaw landmark restaurant, known for its fried chicken and watermelon rind pickles, will reopen at 5 p.m. today. The restaurant will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday;, and 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Monday. Holley, who has been with the restaurant since the 1960s, said the building has had some repairs, but that regular customers should see no changes, except for her new role as manager. Holley said sheís cooked, waited tables and performed just about every task required to run a restaurant. …Iíve done it all,î she said. Now that sheís the manager, Holley said, …I donít intend to do all that this time.î While customers can expect to see the same menu items, one feature will be different. New owners Sidetrack LLC dropped …Baggettísî from the restaurantís name. It is now known simply as the Cotton Patch. The restaurant closed March 30, almost two months to the day that Sidetrack paid $630,000 to former owner Jerry Baggett for the Cotton Patch and the nearly 36 acres on which it sits. Since then, construction crews led by Paul Hill, who said he is an employee of Sidetrack, cleared and graded the land adjacent to the Cotton Patch building. On Monday, Hill said the grading had stopped. However, he said that he was unaware of Sidetrackís plans for the rest of the site. …Itís still pretty much like it was [in July],î Hill said, when he told The Tuscaloosa News that Sidetrack had not decided what to do with the site. Greene County officials, residents and business owners have voiced concerns about the possibility that a bingo hall might open on the site to compete with Greenetrack, West Alabamaís only legal gambling entity. County Commissioner William Johnson was one of several community and business leaders who took the podium on July 17 at a rally to support Greenetrack. Although Hill said heís been shown no blueprints or other plans for any kind of business on the graded site, he has said since mid-July that the Cotton Patch would reopen. The restaurant has existed in Greene County since 1937, when its first incarnation opened on U.S. Highway 11 north of Eutaw. That building burned in 1975. Then-owner Bradley Brown, who bought the business in 1972, rebuilt the restaurant on its current site next to Interstate 20/59 in 1977 and operated it until he sold it to Baggett in 1996. The restaurant earned its popularity in years following Prohibition. Greene County was among the first counties to legalize the sale of alcohol after the federal ban was lifted and all the surrounding counties, including Tuscaloosa County, remained dry. While the Cotton Patch didnít sell alcohol, it did not frown on …brown baggersî and even supplied them with mixers. The Cotton Patch began selling alcohol when the restaurant moved to its current location. The brown-bagging ended in 1987 because it created problems with the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Over the years, customers have written on the walls and burned their names into the rafters. Itís all still there, Holley said, and there are no intentions to change a thing. …The Cotton Patch,î she said, …is still the same.î Reach Jason Morton at [email protected] or 205-722-0200.
It took almost three months, but the Cotton Patch has returned in all its Southern-fried glory.
